About Afterman
Cavemen were great designers.
Have you seen the documentary by Herzog called Cave of Forgotten Dreams? It's an intimate look at some of the most well-preserved cave paintings ever discovered. The work is so beautifully detailed and expressive it's absolutely gorgeous to see in all the HD glory Herzog provides. Those cavemen 10,000 years ago sure had some artistic talent, but what's most interesting is the stories the paintings tell. Lacking any known written language, our ancestors told stories through these paintings, and these stories are so timeless that even we, so many years later, can easily understand & relate to them. This understanding gives us an incredible insight into who our ancestors were, where we came from, what it was like on Earth so very very long ago. The paintings convey an intimate message that all of humanity can understand, and that, ultimately, is the role of a designer: communicate clearly & effectively the message intended so that the receiver understands. Today we have the luxury of written language and numerous forms of communication, and while the style of the delivery may change every 5 - 10 years, those messages live on in recorded form and allow us to look back in time to gain a better understanding of who we are as a species and to move forward in a better manner based on our past success & failure. This is my role as a designer today: To effectively communicate today's messages across numerous forms of media and to various audiences. It's only with a comprehensive understanding of the sudience and a perfected style of delivery that I can attain this. So that's what I strive for in my work. Sometimes I nail it, sometimes not so much. But I have those past successes & failures well chronicled and learn from them with every new project.
